For now my life is consumed dealing with the aftermath of Mom’s passing. It’s an emotional, physical and intellectual roller coaster. The fact that she lived 900 miles away means this will be the second time in 2-1/2 weeks that I will be flying back north. Then at the end of the month we’ll drive up for her celebration of life. That on top of my chemo side effects leaves me exhausted most days. On the other hand it is a privilege to take care of all Mom left behind. She was an extraordinary person. Missing her so intensely is a sweet reminder of how much she was loved.
I did have a check-up at UCSF last Tuesday. I’m also participating in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) research program “All of Us.” So when I went for my labs instead of taking the usual 3 vials of blood, this time as part of the study, they took 7 different vials! All in an effort to help researchers conduct studies on health and disease.
My check-up was pretty good. My labs were great. My side effects…well they are what they are. The only real hick-up for me was the tumor marker. Last month it was down to 11.8 this month it as up to 16.5. Very disappointing to say the least. August’s PET scan will tell the tale on whether the Xeloda is making any progress on my tumors. Fingers crossed.

You and your mom undoubtedly had a very, very strong bond. We are heartbroken that she’s not able to be there to have those wonderful conversations with you. We trust that you feel her presence in other ways.
